Spreading Awareness to High School Students

By Taylor Rusche

As I got older I realized that people were unconsciously using the R-word...and I was not okay with that.View Story ▼My name is Taylor and I have two uncles who have Down syndrome. One is my mom's brother and the other is my dad's brother. I never saw them as being different when I was growing up. But as I got older I realized that people were unconsciously using the R-word...and I was not okay with that. As a senior in high school, I had to do a senior project. I took my project assignment and turned it into the opportunity to spread awareness about Down Syndrome and getting rid of this hateful word...I was very proud with the outcome and although the video is long I encourage you to watch the video and share it with your friends and family. The sooner we take action, the sooner this word will disappear.

About Taylor Rusche:My name is Taylor Rusche and I am a student at Kansas State University! I believe that we can get rid of the R-word!

Let's stop the "R" WORD NOW!!!

By DIana Cooper

I am a mom to the most amazing and handsome son. His name is Nolan and yes he has an intellectual disabilityView Story ▼I am a mom to the most amazing and handsome son. His name is Nolan and yes he has an intellectual disability. I just despise it when I am out in public and asked "what is wrong with him" and I say " he has an intellectual disability" they just stare at me like they have no clue what that means and then respond back "Oh! He's RETARDED!!" I just cringe when I here that word. Let's educate the world and stop the use of the "R" word because my son cannot.

About DIana Cooper:I am now a stay at home mom trying to make sure each and every day my son is treated with respect and has the best day ever!!

My Adopted Son with Down Syndrome

By Pastor Frank

A couple of years ago, a little boy with Down syndrome came into my life. I fell in love with him from the start.View Story ▼A couple of years ago, a little boy with Down syndrome came into my life. I fell in love with him from the start. We adopted him a year and half ago, after he'd been with us for a year. Yes, raising a boy with Down syndrome was a new experience, sometimes quite the challenge. But, we've loved him since he came into our lives. One day we were at a restaurant with him and his two brothers. While there we heard a woman near by talking about the "r-words" that worked at a local store. She kept using the word to her husband and in front of her own children! Every time she said it, it felt like a knife to the heart. My three boys sat there hearing every word. I later explained to them that we shouldn't be angry at her, some people just do not know any better. It is truly sad that some people do not stop to consider the effect their words have on others. My son is not the r-word. He is special- exactly the way God made him.

About Pastor Frank:I am the pastor of a church in Michigan. My wife and I adopted twin boys- one is autistic, the other has Down syndrome. It has been an adventure and they've changed our lives when they came to live with us.

End the R-Word

By Kallie Fuller

My brother who is intellectually disabled once asked me, "why do people use the word 'retarded' to make fun of other people? That's what I am, isn't it? Why is that bad?"View Story ▼My brother who is intellectually disabled once asked me, "why do people use the word 'retarded' to make fun of other people? That's what I am, isn't it? Why is that bad?" and it was that moment that I realized I NEED to do something to stop the use of the r-word. His innocence and outlook on life isn't altered by the ignorant use of the word, however, mine is. I understand how hurtful that word is and I desperately want to make a change. It makes me cringe when I hear rude comments containing the r-word and I have successfully gotten my group of friends to stop the use of it and everyday I try to make a difference for those with intellectual disabilities. I will not stop trying to get people to eliminate the word from their vocabulary. I want to continue the movement and spread the word as much as I possibly can. It is something I am very passionate about because my brother means so much to me.

About Kallie Fuller:I am more than a family member. I am a volunteer, an assistant coach, a referee, and a friend who desperately wants to see a change.
